I believe I’ve figured out “The Wedding Of River Song,” as the resolution was hidden in plain sight all along. One of the recurring themes over the last two seasons of Doctor Who has been how one shouldn’t trust what one sees. It is very easy to change or alter one’s perception so that one can see only what one wants to see. Likewise, it is also easy to make others see what one wants them to see. As Eleven has said many times, “Rule #1: The Doctor lies,” so why shouldn’t he also lie about his death to the universe?
The Doctor’s death is a fixed point in time. He has to die at 5:02 PM on April 22, 2011 on the shores of a silent lake in Utah. If he has to be killed at that particular point of time and space, his killer has to be there as well. River Song is as much of a fixed point in time as the Doctor, but her presence is more important; the Doctor cannot die without River Song killing him. Seems pretty airtight, no? And yet, there’s a loophole: River has to kill the Doctor, but the Doctor does not have to truly be killed, in order for his death to be that immutable fixed point in time.
Enter the Teselecta. Unlike, say, creating a Ganger duplicate of Eleven, the Teselecta allows for the Doctor to be present at that fixed point in time, yet not to actually die. However, it is believed by everyone present—and subsequently, those who weren’t present—that the Doctor truly died at that point in time and space. Why do they believe this? The Doctor’s usage of the Teselecta is akin to a massive, universe-sized Perception Filter. As long as every being in that universe believes that the Doctor is dead, this belief will help keep their universe stable and intact. Meanwhile, the Doctor can effectively hide behind this Perception Filter and work, as he said, in the shadows to find out more about the Silent and what their motivation is to prevent him from answering that Question that only he can answer. A Perception Filter stops being effective when a being smart enough can perceive it, so yes, if every being in the universe became aware that the Doctor truly didn’t die at that fixed point in time, then it is likely that the universe can collapse upon itself in the same way as seen in “The Wedding Of River Song.” What are the odds of that happening? Pretty low, and if it does happen, it will take many years for such news to spread.
(Note the similarity between the Teselecta and a tesseract, as we can only envision a tesseract as a cube within a cube, much like how the Teselecta is really a Doctor within a Doctor. Insert Xzibit meme here.)
