Raven's Nest: So, I hear a lot of people complaining about the way the Doctor treated River in The Wedding of River Song. →

It’s your last paragraph that I find rather compelling about Eleven. Gone are the wild mood swings of Ten, which always came across to me as a way to disguise his insecurity at his past actions in the Time War. Now, with Eleven, it’s personal—the Time War has barely been mentioned in Eleven’s era, but Eleven is all too aware of how he’s treated those who have traveled with him. He’s no longer beating himself up for killing his own people; instead, it’s about what he’s done to Rose and Martha and Sarah Jane and everyone else. A lot of this self-loathing has been in check because of the larger mysteries that have drawn his attention, such as with the Crack in Amy’s house, the Pandorica, the Silent, his death, Amy’s pregnancy, River Song…and on and on. It’s when Eleven has some time to brood things over is when his discomfort and guilt kick in hard.

Because of his tendency to lash out at himself, I wonder how Series 7 will turn out. From what has been mentioned—and I’d like to find some sources for corroboration—it sounds like Amy and Rory won’t be in every episode. I don’t know if this means there will be new companions, or if there will be a lot of solo time for Eleven as he further investigates* those who want him dead (and who believe he is dead). Ten didn’t deal with solo travel too well, as his mood swings and arrogance led him to try and break a fixed point in time on Mars. I don’t think Eleven will do anything similarly drastic, but I wonder about his potential mental state. He needs travel companions to balance out his personality, and while he may doubt himself for risking their safety, the risk would be better than having him trapped in his head.**

*There’s a potential for Series 7 to cross over into Sherlock territory, though more in similar plots and M.O. than with Eleven feeding Jammy Dodgers to Watson.

**I think I just answered what the Doctor saw in his room in The God Complex: a dead TARDIS, no companions, and him all alone.

I’ll make this short and sweet, comparing two quotes:

From The Wedding of River Song:

DOCTOR
It’s insane! Worse, it’s stupid! You embarrass me.

From Forest of the Dead:

DOCTOR
I am the Doctor.

RIVER
Yeah. Someday.
