Yep. One of the many reasons why Season 3 was horrible, IMO. Martha was totally wasted as a character, the Master’s fey-hipster recreation was scarcely believable, the “Lonely God” plot about Ten was insulting to every other incarnation that came beforehand, and in spite of her absence, Rose hung over the entire season like a stale fart. There were so many good individual episodes in Season 3, yet the overall arc was the worst one of the revived series. I’ll entertain the notion that Season 3’s development was to illustrate how self-centered and potentially malevolent Ten’s incarnation was, though in order to buy that theory, you’d have to accept Tennant’s version of the Doctor as a rogue anti-hero that was, out of all his incarnations, the most in touch with his dark side.“Martha was different. Martha was that all important word that so many faux-strong female characters lack: she was capable. She could handle herself. She was smart, so smart. She didn’t sit there in awe. She did something about it. She was useful, not merely as a deux ex machina when needed, but because of her actual proper skills and intelligence. And that is why her bullshit schoolgirl crush on the Doctor was not only an affront to an otherwise rich character, but a huge slap in the face to what could have been a far more excellent season.”—
